PlayGym, Creative Discovery Museum's innovative early childhood enrichment program, begins a new eight-week session Feb. 25.
PlayGym is a carefully designed program that encourages the development of motor skills, cognitive skills, social skills, and self-confidence. Fun-filled, age appropriate activities using colorful gym equipment and sensory stimulation provide a wealth of "food" for the brain. Parents and children make friends, share special time together, enjoy new experiences, and have fun.
In the first three years of life, 90% of the brain is developed. At birth, the brain contains millions of neurons that carry messages through the brain. Each neuron can produce thousands of synapses, which are connections to other brain cells and are the key to healthy development and learning. Sensory activities (sight, sounds, smells, touch, and taste) stimulate the brain to create these synapses which, with repetition, become the brain's foundation.
PlayGym provides the type of sensory stimulation necessary for brain development. A variety of delightful repeated activities such as riding the "choo choo" log and the see saws, blowing bubbles, bouncing on balls, playing parachute games, and singing stimulate the mind and offer the opportunity for synapses to develop. These activities stimulate the mind and offer the opportunity for synapses to develop, while spending a fun-filled time with a caregiver and making new friends. Who knew brain development could be such fun?
Developing memory is an important part of learning, so some PlayGym class activities are repeated each week. With this repetition, children become familiar with the routine and can anticipate what will come next. PlayGym provides a comfortable predictable routine, which children look forward to each week.
PlayGym is taught by Jenette Dean, who holds a B.S. in psychology from the University of Maryland. She is also a certified teacher with over 20 years experience in early childhood education.
There are four age-appropriate levels of PlayGym.
BabyGym: 4 to 14 months
Tues. 9:30 a.m. and Thurs. 10:30 a.m.
Babies engage in a carefully planned program that addresses all important areas of early development. Baby signing, music, movement, socialization, and language development are included in each class. Keepsake art is offered twice a month giving lots of opportunities for sharing baby's milestones with the family.
Little Ones: 12 to 24 months
Mon. 10:30 a.m., Tue. 10:30 a.m., Thurs. 11:30 a.m., and Fri. 10:30 a.m.
Parents and children enjoy activities based on age appropriate themes that change weekly. Baby sign language gives children communication skills that transfer to the home setting. All classes include seesaw time, choo-choo, bubbles, rhythm band and project time.
2 Much Fun: 24 to 36 months
Tues. 11:30 a.m., Thurs. 9:30 a.m. or Fri. 11:30 a.m.
Brains and muscles are challenged using age appropriate gym equipment, parachute games, tumbling, art projects and rhythm band music. Children also practice social skills as they learn to share, take turns and enjoy playing in a group setting.
Preschool Enrichment: 36 to 47 months
Mon. 11:30 a.m. and Fri. 9:30 a.m..
Children experience sensory filled activities based on early childhood literary classics. Activities such as making ice cream in a bag, spray painting shirts, planting seeds, and baking cookies provide rich connections to delightful literature.
Creative Discovery Museum has added American Sign Language education to its instruction for children enrolled in the BabyGym (4-14 months) and Little Ones (12-24 months) classes. Studies show children can sign much sooner than they can talk, and signing is the perfect way to teach babies early language skills. This is a huge movement in early childhood education that has experts really excited.
